Two unexploded Second World War bombs have been discovered during work to widen the A20 motorway near Rotterdam.

The 500-pound bombs were found near a railway bridge in Moordrecht by surveyors checking the site for unexploded ordnance.

The devices do not pose an immediate danger, but will have to be removed before work starts on the road in November, Zuidplas municipal council said.

The road will be closed and train services between Rotterdam and Gouda suspended while bomb disposal experts deal with the munitions overnight on November 16-17.

Two provincial roads will also be closed and people living in the immediate vicinity will have to spend the night away from home.
